The Sailboat Cruiser: Your Monthly Newsletter, Issue #79
October 18, 2025
Hi

The Sailboat Cruiser

Following my recent restart of this Newsletter, I'd like to say a genuine "THANK YOU" to all of you who replied with "Welcome back" messages, including those who wrongly concluded that I had finally "turned my toes up" as we say in these parts. Although in a few days time I'm due to complete my 80th circumnavigation of the sun, I'll do my best to stick around for a while yet.

But enough of that, it's the time of the year that most of us are thinking of hauling out and laying up our boats for the ravages of the winter months. For those fortunate souls who keep their boats in the Caribbean, I've little sympathy but plenty of sinful envy.

So here goes with my latest offering...

Preparing Your Sailboat for Storage: The Guide to Hauling Out and Laying-Up

It's time to protect your biggest asset and guarantee a stress-free launch next season.

Every experienced sailor knows that the transition from water to land is the moment of maximum stress for both the boat and the owner. Whether you are avoiding the tropical hurricane season or securing your vessel against the North Atlantic's freezing grip, a quick lift-out and a few casual covers simply won't cut it.

Neglecting key systems like the engine exhaust or trusting a stack of unsecured tripod stands can lead to costly and time-consuming repairs in the spring.

Our in-depth guide provides a proven, meticulous checklist for hauling out and laying up your boat securely and correctly, including:

  • The essential engine and fuel system tasks, such as draining the exhaust waterlock and using 'fogging' oil for your outboard.
  • Five common and costly lay-up mistakes experienced sailors make, from ignoring the bilge pump line to creating a mildew factory with tight covers.
  • A guide to inspecting your standing rigging, maintaining seacocks, and preparing your interior to fight moisture and vermin.
  • How to secure your boat safely ashore, including the crucial details for using tripod stands and ground anchors.

Click here to read the full guide and ensure your boat is perfectly protected all winter long

All the best
