Hi

The Sailboat Cruiser

It was over a year ago that I wrote to tell you that we (Mary and I) had sold 'Alacazam' and our days of cruising around the Caribbean were over, but I'm still a member of the Yachting Journalist Association and the owner and creator of Sailboat-Cruising.com.

With more time on my hands these days, I've decided to give the website a full makeover with new and updated content which I hope you'll find interesting.

I've made a start, and it occurred to me that you might like to see how I'm getting along with it, so here's the bones of the first one...

Unlocking the Secrets of Hunter's Unique B&R Rig

Have you ever wondered about the distinctive, swept-back mast on many Hunter cruising yachts? That’s the B&R rig, and it's much more than just a clever look; it’s a radical, backstay-free design that completely re-engineers the physics of a sailboat mast.

Many sailors are unsure how this unconventional setup works, or if its strength can truly match a traditional rig. Our latest article uncovers the ingenious Swedish engineering behind this system, explaining why it's a game-changer for cruising, especially when it comes to interior space and simple sail handling.

You will learn:

  • Why the B&R rig typically has no standing backstay and how it maintains exceptional strength.

  • The key advantages for cruisers, including simplified handling and spacious below-deck interiors.

  • The one major downside when sailing downwind and the simple fix to prevent sail chafe.

  • How tuning the B&R rig differs from a conventional setup to maximise pointing ability.

Click here to unravel the full story behind this robust and innovative sail plan.

All the best
