| Hi The Sailboat Cruiser Some years ago we were members of the Royal Western Yacht Club of England, one of the world’s first yacht clubs, which entitled us to fly a privileged ensign. These differ from the standard British Ensign (the 'Red Duster) in being blue where the other is red. Flying such an ensign requires compliance with a number of strict obligations which, if not fully complied with would constitute a breach of the Merchant Shipping Act 1995 and could result in significant penalties. We didn't go for the blue alternative as we were sure to unwittingly break the protocol, and were proud to fly the traditional Red Ensign at Alacazam's stern instead. But this set me thinking about all the other issues of international flag etiquette that perhaps we were failing to comply with. It was clearly time to do some research into the subject, after which I felt at least partially qualfied to put pen to paper. I've recently had another look
at my earlier scriblings and updated it. Please let me know if I've got anything wrong or missed anything out.
