'Island Spell', a Mk 1 Laurent Giles Wooden Vertue Pilot Cutter For Sale

by Chris
(Porthmadog)

A rare opportunity to purchase this Early All Original Example of this Beautiful Design, known for its safe and strong construction together with good sailing enjoyment in all weathers.

After many years of careful refurbishment this vessel carries a Certificate and Insurance and currently Lies in Porthmadog, North West Wales.

She was built to order, and Commissioned in 1950 at Mevagesey, Cormwall, by Percy Mitchell.
He Built many small & large Boats before & after WW2, his book (with the boat) shows this Vertue, along with other plates.

His work on the Cutty Sark back in 1935 is a tribute to his skills in Boat building.
'Island Spell' was originally built without a 'Dog-House'or engine, as specified by her future owner - A Lord Churston of Churston Manor, Cornwall. It was later that she was fitted with an engine and later still a Full Stern Cabin, making her complete in 1973.

Her windows are all of Toughened Safety Glass making her safe in Storm Conditions.

Her Deck is of Canadian Pine whilst her spar and boom are Spruce with oak section on the boom for reefing.

HISTORY.
The past ownership of this vessel was explored at some length, some time ago, and involved many letters, phone-calls and much patience. A Land-Log has been written about what is known, together with accounts of work carried out since the early nineties when she was brought back to Llanbedr for real work on her. At that time, she was surveyed and documented for my interest before work started,as she was in a somewhat 'run-down' state.

Pictures can be seen in a scrap-book, of how she was when I first took ownership. Today, she is a very different vessel and one to be treasured.

Her Asking Price is in keeping with other British Built Vertues, which do come on the market and I am selling her at £18,500.00.
