DSC distress alerts are wonderfully robust when everything in the chain is healthy, but they’re far from foolproof. The system relies on correct vessel identity, a valid GPS position, clean digital wiring and a functioning antenna path. If any one of those elements is compromised, your distress alert may be delayed, incomplete or never transmitted at all. These are the failure modes I see most often on cruising boats.
A DSC distress alert is only as good as the identity it carries. If the MMSI is wrong, missing or partially entered, the Coastguard cannot reliably link the alert to your vessel.
Common causes include:
A DSC distress alert without a valid MMSI is essentially anonymous. It will still be heard, but the response will be slower and less certain.
A DSC distress alert without position data is only half a distress alert. The receiving station knows someone is in trouble, but not where.

If your radio shows NO GPS, your distress alert will not include your position. That is a critical fault and should be fixed immediately.
DSC radios depend on clean digital data. NMEA 0183 wiring in particular is vulnerable to:
A radio may appear to work perfectly for voice communication while silently losing its digital inputs. That’s why regular checks of the GPS feed and DSC self‑test functions matter.
The antenna path is the single most common point of failure in real‑world DSC distress alerts. A radio can only transmit a distress alert if the RF path is intact.

A DSC distress alert is a digital transmission, but it still relies on the same antenna system as your voice calls. If the antenna is compromised, the alert may not get out at all.
DSC test calls are extremely useful, but they only confirm the digital signalling path between your radio and the Coastguard’s system. They do not verify:
A radio with a marginal or failing antenna can still complete a DSC test call because the digital burst is short and robust. That same radio may fail to transmit a full‑power distress alert when it matters.
