A hard, crunchy section usually means the core has melted or fused. This is often caused by clutch slippage or friction from a tight sheave.
A shiny, glassy patch on the cover is a classic sign of heat damage. Once fibres glaze, they lose strength rapidly.
Flattening indicates compression damage. It often appears where a line sits in a clutch or jammer for long periods.

Undersized lines run hotter under load. Oversized lines may not sit correctly in sheaves or clutches. Both shorten lifespan.
