What Happens If a VHF/DSC Radio Runs Without GPS for Several Days?

A modern VHF/DSC radio is designed to be the one piece of equipment that will still get a distress alert out when everything else has gone wrong. But it can only do that properly if it knows where you are. When the GPS feed disappears for hours—or worse, days—the radio quietly degrades into something far less capable than most skippers realise.

Why GPS Matters to a DSC‑Equipped VHF Radio

DSC works by sending a digital distress alert on Channel 70 containing your MMSI and your current position. That position is the single most important part of the message. Without it, the Coastguard knows who is in trouble but not where to start looking. In a real emergency, that distinction is everything.


What Your Radio Transmits Without GPS

If the GPS feed drops out, the radio can still send a DSC distress alert—but it can only transmit your MMSI. No latitude. No longitude. No last‑known position. Just an identity.

That means the receiving station must treat your alert as a blind call for help. They will attempt to raise you on Channel 16, but if you cannot speak—injury, fire, flooding, smoke, or simply being unable to reach the mic—your distress alert has lost most of its value.

The Four‑Hour Rule: Manual Position Entry

Every DSC radio allows you to manually enter your position. But there’s a catch: You must re‑enter it every four hours, or the radio automatically discards it.

This is an international requirement to prevent radios transmitting stale positions that could send rescuers miles in the wrong direction. So unless you’re disciplined enough to update your position several times a day, your radio will soon revert to sending your MMSI only.


Why a Position‑less Distress Alert Is a Serious Problem

A DSC alert without a position is still taken seriously, but it forces the Coastguard into a slower, more uncertain response. They must:

  • Attempt to raise you on Channel 16
  • Check for AIS targets with your MMSI
  • Look for any recent reports of your vessel
  • Consider your last known area of operation
  • Potentially initiate a wide‑area search

In other words, you’ve turned a pinpoint digital distress system into something closer to a 1970s voice‑only emergency call.

How Long a Radio Will Keep Using an Old Position

If the radio had a valid GPS fix before the signal was lost, it will continue using that last position until it becomes more than four hours old. After that, it is automatically purged.

This is why a radio that has been without GPS for several days is effectively running blind. It has no valid position to transmit, and unless you’ve been manually updating it, your distress alert will be incomplete.


Practical Steps to Avoid GPS Loss at Sea

A few simple checks prevent this problem entirely:

  • Ensure the radio’s internal GPS has a clear sky view (not buried under a sprayhood or metalwork).
  • If using an external GPS feed, check the NMEA wiring and power supply.
  • Verify the GPS status before leaving harbour—most radios show a clear “GPS FIX” or “NO GPS” indicator.
  • If the GPS fails underway, manually enter your position at least every four hours.
  • Consider a backup GPS source, such as a chartplotter feed or a handheld GPS.

Summing Up
