Do I Need an AIS Transceiver or Is Receive‑Only Enough?

For years this has been one of the most common questions I’ve been asked by new cruisers and anyone upgrading their electronics. And it’s a fair question — AIS equipment isn’t cheap, and the marketing noise doesn’t always make the decision any clearer.

The short version is simple: receive‑only AIS helps you avoid ships, but a transceiver helps ships avoid you. And in the real world, that difference matters more than most sailors realise.

Let’s break it down properly.

What an AIS Receiver Actually Gives You

A receive‑only AIS setup listens to AIS broadcasts from other vessels and displays them on your chartplotter, tablet, or navigation software. You’ll see:

  • Ship names
  • MMSI numbers
  • Course and speed
  • Closest point of approach (CPA)
  • Time to CPA
  • Collision alarms

For situational awareness, it’s brilliant. You instantly know what’s around you, what it’s doing, and whether it’s a threat.

  • A ship’s bridge watchkeeper won’t see your target on their screen
  • Their collision‑avoidance software won’t warn them about you

  • Their ECDIS won’t plot you
  • Their CPA calculations won’t include you

In busy shipping lanes, at night, in fog, or when you’re under sail and making 4–5 knots, that invisibility is a real disadvantage.

And remember: commercial ships rely heavily on AIS. It’s not just a convenience — it’s built into their bridge workflow.

Why a Full AIS Transceiver Changes Everything

An AIS transceiver (Class B or Class B+) broadcasts your position, course, and speed to every AIS‑equipped vessel around you. Suddenly:

  • Ships see you automatically
  • You appear on their collision‑avoidance systems
  • You show up on their CPA alarms
  • You’re plotted on their ECDIS
  • You’re visible even if they can’t see your lights

This is especially important in:

  • Night passages
  • Fog or heavy rain
  • Shipping lanes
  • Offshore passages
  • Areas with fishing fleets
  • Strong tidal streams where your course over ground may differ from your heading

A transceiver doesn’t just improve your situational awareness — it improves theirs.

And that’s the real safety gain.


Offshore vs Coastal: Which Do You Really Need

Here’s the honest breakdown.

Coastal Cruising

Receive‑only AIS is workable if you’re:

  • Staying inshore
  • Sailing mostly in daylight
  • Avoiding major shipping lanes
  • On a tight budget

You’ll still benefit from seeing ships early and making informed decisions.

Offshore or Long‑Distance Cruising

A transceiver becomes the clear choice if you’re:

  • Crossing shipping lanes
  • Sailing at night
  • Making long passages
  • Sailing short‑handed
  • Navigating in poor visibility

When Receive‑Only Is Enough

Modern AIS transceivers are far easier to install than older units. Key points:

  • Power draw is modest — typically 2–4W
  • Antenna options include a dedicated AIS whip or a VHF splitter
  • NMEA 2000 integration is now plug‑and‑play
  • GPS antennas are compact and easy to mount
  • Class B+ (SOTDMA) units offer better visibility offshore

If you already have a modern chartplotter, adding a transceiver is usually straightforward.


My Recommendation for Cruising Sailors

For most cruising sailors — especially those planning passages beyond the breakwater — a full AIS transceiver is the right choice.

Receive‑only AIS is useful, but it’s only half the picture. A transceiver dramatically improves your visibility to ships and other yachts, and that visibility is what keeps you safe when conditions deteriorate or when you’re tired, short‑handed, or dealing with unexpected weather.
